A controller mount that prints without supports
Why my most popular design is also one of my simplest: one piece, no supports, and a fit that works for almost any controller.
My most popular design is also one of the simplest things I’ve made: a mount that holds a game controller.
What I wanted
I wanted something simple. It had to hold any controller — Switch, Xbox, PlayStation — and it had to print without supports. Supports cost you quality where they touch the part, and every extra structure is one more chance for a print job to fail. A part that prints clean on a standard FDM printer, first time, is a part anyone can reproduce.
That’s how I approach most of my designs: simple, scalable, optimal, and streamlined. If a design can avoid support structures entirely, it should.
How it came together
I modeled it in Fusion 360 and printed it on an Ender 3 at 0.2 mm layers with 20% infill in PLA. The fit came from printing, testing, and adjusting: I tried different controllers in each version and changed the model until each one sat securely.
That testing is why the download includes two versions. Some controllers secured a bit nicer in a narrower mount, so there’s a narrow version and a wide one. The wide one is in the photos.
It’s one piece, needs no support material, and prints quickly.
Where it went
I published it in August 2019. I still remember the day someone posted a photo of their print and how happy their kids were with it. It still makes me smile.
I’ve also seen people make thousands of dollars on eBay selling prints of my designs, listed with my own photos, and that made me happy too. As long as other people enjoy my designs, I’m a very satisfied engineer.
